Gynecology Q & A
How often should I see my gynecologist?
To stay healthy, patients should visit Dr. Quinsey every year for a well-woman checkup to ensure they stay healthy as they move through the different stages of life. Women’s health needs can vary dramatically as they get older.
Gynecology is focused on women’s health and includes screenings, exams, evaluations, preventive care, and other treatments tailored to address the unique health needs of women.
It’s very important to schedule a gynecology exam when unusual symptoms occur or if STD testing, contraceptive services, or other treatments and services are needed.
Women with unusual medical needs may be advised to visit more frequently for screenings and other services.
When should I see a gynecologist?
While you should schedule a well-woman exam once a year, regardless of your health, there are certain times where additional visits may be required, including:
- Abnormal Pap smear results
- Pelvic pain
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Heavy or abnormal uterine bleeding
- Contraceptive management
Though the above symptoms don’t necessarily indicate an underlying condition, they can be the first signs of a problem. Endometriosis is a painful condition in which the uterine tissue begins growing outside the uterus. It can cause severe pelvic pain and heavy bleeding.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) — which causes ovarian cysts — can cause irregular bleeding and infertility issues.
Uterine fibroids are another common gynecological condition that Dr. Quinsey treats. These non-cancerous growths can vary in size and can cause pelvic pain and heavy bleeding, and may even affect your fertility.
What happens during a routine gynecological exam?
Dr. Quinsey begins every annual gynecology or well-woman visit with a review of your medical history and symptoms.
He performs a general physical exam as well as a symptom directed pelvic exam.
Depending on your signs, symptoms, and historical information provided, additional exams may be recommended. Dr. Quinsey may prescribe lab work, such as a urinalysis or blood tests, or imaging studies like mammograms, MRIs, or bone density studies.
After reviewing all of your information, Dr. Quinsey will tailor a plan of care specific to your needs.
